My name is Jason and I’ve been there. I’ve felt like shit – overwhelmed with life, floating along saying yes to whatever sounds good, frustrated and depressed, isolating myself from everyone and everything.
I’ve lost touch of who I was, what was important to me, and even how to feel anything except anger and frustration.
I’ve made bullshit excuses to myself for my behaviour and been distracted by meaningless external noise I thought meant I was ‘successful’.
But, I still felt shit; I didn’t really know what I wanted. I was overwhelmed with everything I thought I needed to do, and I had no idea how to actually make any changes stick.
I was still depressed and frustrated.
My partner, Carole, was in the UK visiting family.
I got a message from my sister-in-law in the UK, “Carole’s been in a car accident. She’s in hospital.”
I’d attended many traffic crashes and dealt with a lot of trauma and death as a Police Officer, but her injury list still horrified me.
Fortunately, she was going to survive. Unfortunately, she wouldn’t be cleared to fly home for about 4-months and there was a long road of ongoing recovery ahead.
Then, just weeks later my Mum died of lung cancer.
I was knocked for six
I felt terrible
I re-evaluated my life
I made the tough decision to close the CrossFit gym I’d established 8-years previously and spent a few months assessing where I was at.
I’d been distracting myself from difficult thoughts & emotions by constantly ‘doing’; being busy.
Shoving pain deep down where I couldn’t feel it. I’d lost touch with myself; who I was, what I stood for & even how to feel.
I felt neutral all the time.
